From an existing garment to your own design

Even before I started making clothes, I was altering existing garments. I wanted something personal to wear to a birthday, a party or an opening. Experimenting with what was already there gave me room for new ideas.

I bring that same pleasure into the atelier. A different fabric, a striking detail or a new combination can give a garment a completely different character.

New ideas with existing materials

Pieces from a collection that have not yet found an owner can have a fresh start too. Upcycling lets us look again at the fabric, the details and the possibilities of a garment.

8 tips to give your clothes a new life

Choose a garment from your wardrobe and start with one change.

  1. Decide what to change

    Try the garment on and notice what you still like. Is it the length, the fit or a detail you would like to change?

  2. Try different buttons

    Different buttons can change the look of a blouse, cardigan or jacket. Check that they fit the existing buttonholes.

  3. Play with length

    Pin a new hem first and try it on again. Only cut once you know the length you want to keep.

  4. Use a scrap of fabric

    Add an accent to a pocket, collar or cuff. Place different colours and textures together before choosing.

  5. Make a repair a feature

    Finish a small hole or worn patch with an appliqué or embroidery. A repair can become a personal detail.

  6. Add beads or sequins

    Start with a small accent. Secure embellishments firmly and consider their weight on the fabric.

  7. Try fabric paint or a transfer

    Check that the fabric is suitable and follow the product instructions. Test on an inconspicuous area or a scrap first.

  8. Turn the fabric into something else

    Does the garment no longer suit you? You may be able to use the fabric for a small accessory or a detail on another garment.
